What does SILS, SLS, and ILS mean?

SILS, or semi-independent living services, SLS, or supported living services, and ILS, or independent living services, are ways of categorizing the amount of assistance required and all provide assistance to individuals which supports them to live successfully in their community.

What is a disability?

An individual with a disability is defined by the ADA as a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a person who has a history or record of such an impairment, or a person who is perceived by others as having such an impairment.

Are there different types of disabilities?

Disability types include various physical and mental impairments that can hamper or reduce a person’s ability to carry out their day-to-day activities, such as physical disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, vision or hearing impairments, cognitive disabilities, and psychological disabilities.

How can I get more involved in the disabled community?

There are a wide variety of ways to become more familiar with your local disabled community. Look up charity and volunteer events in your area, practice outreach by following social media accounts that are run by disabled persons, or better yet, choose a career in a field that directly supports disabled persons.
